Adolescent & Youth in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Family Planning Program has made remarkable progress over the last thirty years due to continuous political commitment, innovative program approach, government and non-government collaboration, strong IEC program, method-mix cafeteria approach and commitment of the field-level functionaries. Bangladesh played an extremely important role in the formulation of International Conference on Population and Development ’94 (ICPD’94) Program of Action. Over the last ten years following the ICPD, Bangladesh has achieved commendable success in improving the reproductive health status of the people. Reproductive health including family planning services is accessible to the population. However, despite progress Bangladesh is facing challenges like, high maternal and child mortality and morbidity, inadequate adolescent health care, threat of HIV/AIDS, migration towards cities, aging, drug abuse, inadequate nutrition intake, poverty, less accessibility of health facilities, low quality health care, violence against women and unplanned urbanization. On the other hand, the government of Bangladesh has already taken necessary steps to overcome the problem and trying hard to translate its dream into a reality. Government in cooperation with civil society is working hard to ensure a rapid decline in population growth and open the greater freedom of choice.
The government is determined to maintain the momentum of efforts to lower fertility, to reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity, burden of communicable diseases and to improve quality of life.

I hope Bangladesh Family Planning Program would be able to achieve the target of our Health, Nutrition & Population Sector Program (HNPSP). I expect that this spirit of promptness and initiative will continue.
