MC&RH Unit under the DGFP has been providing maternal, child and reproductive health services through Maternal & Child Health Training Institute (MCHTI), Azimpur, Mohammadpur Fertility Services and Training center (MFSTC), 95 Mother and Child Welfare Centers (MCWC) including 67 EOC’s, 402 Upazila Health Complex’s MCH-FP units and about 3,500 Union Health and Family Welfare Centers. (UH&FWC).

EOC Program
In order to reduce maternal and child mortality, MCHTI, Azimpur and 67 Mother and Child Welfare Centers (MCWC) have been providing Emergency Obstetric Care (EOC). FWVs - who are working at UH&FWCs - are being given 6 months’ midwifery training with a view to increasing their knowledge and skill. 1,500 UH&FWCs will be upgraded by 2006 aiming at providing service of normal delivery and family planning permanent method regularly. Under this program 861 UH&FWCs have already been upgraded. Physical infrastructures have been developed and the centers have been equipped with modern tools.


Through the MC-FP clinics of 402 Upazila Health Complexes all sorts of maternal, child and reproductive health and family planning services are being provided. Besides, through the 30,000 satellite clinics conducted at community level MC-FP services are being provided at the grass roots level every month.

Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) Program
Government has taken initiative to conduct 50% delivery by SBAs by the year 2010. To attain this objective, initiative has been taken to train Skilled Birth Attendants (SBAs). The aim of SBA training is to create skilled birth attendants who can serve a patient during her pregnancy, delivery and post delivery period as well as identify critical patients and refer them to the right place at right time.

MR training and service
Basic and refreshers training on safe MR is being given to doctors, Family Welfare Visitors and Female Sub-Assistant Community Medical Officers, which is certainly playing an important role in preventing unsafe abortion and thus contributing to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.

Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP)
It is estimated that at present about 12 lac mothers are victims of unwanted pregnancy. To prevent this unwanted pregnancy, Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) has been made available throughout the country. First dose of this pill (ECP) has to be taken within 72 hours and the 2nd dose after 12 hours of first dose by the woman after an unprotected intercourse. ECPs are available at District Hospitals, MCWCs, Upazila Health Complexes, UH&FWCs, and also from Family Welfare Assistants, NGO workers at community level involved in family planning activities and also from registered drug stores.

Maternal Health Voucher Scheme
Aiming at more effective reduction of maternal mortality rate Maternal Health Voucher Scheme Programs are running in 352 Unions of 21 Upazilas under 21 districts with the assistance of WHO.

EPI
Field workers of Family Planning department have been contributing actively in reducing maternal and child mortality rate through its active participation in EPI activities. FWAs’ contribution is vital in achieving great success in EPI program of our country.

IMCI
Presently Family Planning Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) is being implemented at 48 upzilas. In these upazilas, Sub-Assistant Medical Officers (SAMO) of DGFP along with Health Department workers are being given training on IMCI and presently they are providing medical services according to the guidelines of IMCI.

Essential Newborn Care
Doctors and FWVs working at MCWCs are being given training on essential newborn care for reducing childhood mortality and morbidity.

Saving Newborn’s Lives
Saving Newborn’s Lives (SNL),-SCF (USA), Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (Peri-natal Care Project), ICDDR,B, UNICEF, WHO and other NGOs have been working along with the government to reduce newborn mortality.
