Information, Education and Motivation (IEM) Unit of Directorate General of Family Planning has been working since 1977 for creating awareness about maternal and child health care, small family norms and overall health care in Bangladesh.

The aim of the IEC program is envisaged to

  • Build effective community support for family planning and health seeking behavior
  • Change attitudes and behavior of people to improve their health status \
  • Change attitudes and behavior of service providers to provide client centered services
  • Promote men's respect and responsibility towards the women and the girl child in the society
  • Establish the small family norms as a way of life.

Objectives of IEC program

Broad Objective: To bring about behavioral change among the people towards developing small family norms, practice healthy life style, increase nutritional status and reduce MMR & IMR by introducing IEC interventions.

Specific Objectives

  • To strengthen the capability and capacity of IEM
  • To assess the need for developing, designing and redesigning programs for effective IEC
  • To provide current information and knowledge on FP-MCH, RH and other health issues for behavioral change among stake holders
  • To create awareness on health and family planning issues and increase community participation in the health & family planning programs
  • To increase IEC knowledge among the service providers for better counseling and service delivery
  • To strengthen information and dissemination network nationally and globally on the population, FP and RH.

Activities of IEM unit

  • Provide financial support to Population, Health and Nutrition Cell of Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television and also coordinate the programs
  • Campaign program for promoting delayed marriage
  • Campaign program for decreasing dropout rate in contraception
  • Develop a 10 year IEC Strategy on Health and Reproductive Health focusing on HNPSP
  • IEM Unit’s Documentation Center acts as a focal point for Population Information Network (POPIN) activities
  • Act as a gender focal point for gender activities taken under the DGFP
  • Initiate IEC program to face any emerging and reemerging diseases such as Dengue Fever, Malaria, Arsenic
  • Provide consultancy support for developing, designing and planning of IEC interventions of any other organization
  • Organize workshops for Journalists on RH, FP-MCH.
  • Organize film show programs by AV vans in the field level.
  • Organize mass motivational meetings among fishermen, weaver and other professionals on RH, FP-MCH.
  • Organize workshops for UP chairmen, female UP members on RH, FP-MCH.
  • Organize workshops for mid-level manager on HIV/AIDS.
  • Organize workshops on Population Information Network.
  • Organize media exhibitions on RH, FP-MCH at the field and National level.
  • Organize observance of World Population Day.
  • Publish Parikroma ( Bangla newsletter).
  • Produce TV spots.
  • Produce and reprint films.
  • Formulate advocacy strategy on rural and urban reproductive health.
  • Produce other IEC materials.
  • Fellowship / study tour for IEM personnel.

Activities under Inter-sectoral Population Projects (IPP)

  • Advocacy sub programs are being implemented by twelve ministries and other private organizations
  • Training workshops for officials of IPP project; funded by UNFPA; coordinated by IEM unit
  • A Technical cell was created in 1999 to back-up and support IPP Projects. Two consultants are working to provide technical assistance.
  • Nationwide campaign on safe motherhood and violence against women
  • Programs telecast by television and broadcast by radio
  • Develop IEC materials for counseling and distribution.
